Product Description
I purchased this lovely Petals colorway for my 37th birthday because we all deserve a lovely treat on our birthdays. As a May baby, the flowers are just starting to come to bloom here in Edmonton, so Petals turned into my own little secret garden. ♥
Worked in the round, Secret Garden contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.

What Is Being Made
Secret Garden Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by rhyFlower Knits. This intermediate-level project creates fitted socks with finished circumference measurements available in four sizes: 7.5", 8", 8.5", and 9" (19, 20.5, 21.5, and 23 cm respectively). The pattern accommodates various foot lengths and leg heights, making it adaptable to individual measurements and preferences.
Techniques and Construction
The Secret Garden Socks pattern offers flexibility in construction methodology, with a toe-up version included in the design. This approach allows knitters to start at the toe and work upward toward the cuff, providing advantages in fit customization and yarn management. The pattern is worked on circular needles, which enables seamless construction in the round—a standard technique for sock knitting that eliminates the need for seaming.
A signature stitch featured in this design is the (K3) Cluster, which creates decorative texture throughout the sock. This cluster stitch involves knitting three stitches onto a cable needle, wrapping the working yarn twice around these stitches, and then slipping them back to the right needle. This technique adds visual interest and dimensional detail characteristic of the "Secret Garden" theme.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Knit (K) — basic knit stitches
- K2tog (knit two together) — a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- (K3) Cluster — the decorative signature stitch that wraps yarn around multiple stitches
- Increases (Inc) — used for expanding stitch counts during construction
- Decreases (Dec) — used for shaping the sock to the foot
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Secret Garden Socks pattern requires 300 to 500 yards of fingering weight yarn (274 to 458 meters), with the yardage varying based on foot length and desired leg height. The yarn weight is specified as 4-ply, which is the standard for sock knitting and provides the appropriate thickness for durable, well-fitting hosiery.
The suggested yarn for this project is Lofty Loops Yarn – Lofty Sock, a blend of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon. This fiber composition offers the softness and temperature regulation of merino wool combined with nylon's durability and elasticity, making it ideal for socks that will withstand regular wear and frequent washing. The yarn is available in 400-yard (365-meter) skeins weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams), with the sample shown knit in the "Petals" colorway.
Knitting needles required are US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 cm) in length, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for working the cluster stitches, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches by 11 rounds in stockinette stitch, which ensures proper fit and fabric drape. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using the toe-up version on 64 stitches. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for creating socks that fit properly around the foot and leg.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch work. The combination of circular needle knitting, decreases and increases for shaping, and the decorative cluster stitch technique requires comfort with basic knitting fundamentals and the ability to follow multi-step instructions.
