Product Description

0-3m (3-6m, 6-12m, 12-18m, 18-24m, 2-3yrs, 3-4yrs) designed to fit with 1-2cm positive ease

This is a baby bolero worked in aran-weight yarn. The garment is worked in one piece from the top down incorporating the cable along the neckline. It starts with a provisional cast-on, then a short section of the braided cable is worked. Then stitches are picked up along one edge of the cable and from the cast-on edge, allowing the body of the cardigan to grow from there. The cable continues along each edge. The bolero incorporates raglan sleeve shaping, short-row shaping on the body and a knitted-on cable.

This pattern features in Issue 88 of Knit Now, which is on sale from 17th May in supermarkets, newsagents and craft stores across the UK. Find your nearest UK stockist here. Copies can also be ordered from MoreMags or if you prefer, digital editions are available via PocketMags.

Sniofa Bolero Baby Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Sniofa Bolero is a baby cardigan designed by Ciara Ní Reachtnín, created as an elegant cover-up suitable for flower girls or special occasions. This knitted garment combines practical warmth with decorative cable detailing, making it both functional and visually striking for infants and young children.

Construction Method

This cardigan is knit in one piece from the top down, a construction technique that allows for seamless integration of design elements and simplified fitting adjustments. The pattern begins with a provisional cast on, followed by a short section of the signature braid from which the design takes its name. Stitches are then picked up along one edge of the braid and from the cast on edge, allowing the body of the cardigan to develop from this foundation. This top-down approach ensures that the cable detail along the neckline flows naturally into the garment structure.

Shaping Techniques

The Sniofa Bolero employs multiple shaping methods to achieve proper fit and silhouette:

  • Raglan sleeve shaping: Creates sloped armholes and sleeve cap for a comfortable, well-proportioned fit
  • Short row shaping on the body: Adds contour and depth to the torso, improving how the cardigan sits on a baby's frame
  • Braid edging: The signature braid continues along each edge of the cardigan, serving both decorative and structural purposes

Stitch Details

The pattern features cable stitches as the primary decorative element, incorporated along the neckline and continuing as a knit-on cable edge along the cuffs and bottom hem of the bolero. The cable edge adds textural interest and a finished appearance to these boundary areas. The braid element, which gives the design its name, is worked as a foundational feature that influences the overall construction and visual character of the piece.

Finishing Options

The pattern provides flexibility in finishing. The original design features knit-on cable edges on the cuffs and bottom of the bolero for a decorative, coordinated look. For those seeking a more practical everyday cardigan, the pattern suggests omitting the cabled cuffs and finishing instead with an icord bind off, creating a simpler, cleaner edge while maintaining the garment's functionality.

Yarn and Needle Specifications

The Sniofa Bolero is designed to be knit in Aran weight yarn, which ensures rapid project completion—a significant advantage for those creating a special occasion piece. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches by 22 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) and calls for 5mm needles. The Aran weight yarn choice makes this an ideal project for those seeking a quick-to-knit baby cardigan without sacrificing warmth or visual impact.

Difficulty Level

This design is rated as advanced, reflecting the complexity of techniques involved. Knitters should be comfortable with cable work, provisional cast ons, picking up stitches, raglan shaping, short row shaping, and knit-on edging techniques. The top-down construction and multiple simultaneous shaping methods require intermediate-to-advanced skills and attention to pattern detail.

Yarn Weight Options

While the pattern is primarily designed for Aran weight yarn, the downloadable PDF indicates compatibility with multiple yarn weights including DK, heavy worsted, and worsted options. This flexibility allows knitters to adapt the pattern to available materials or to adjust the final garment size and drape according to preference, though the specified Aran weight will produce the intended finished dimensions and fabric characteristics.
