Social Distancing, Together Cowl by Laurie Beardsley
Project Overview
Social Distancing, Together is an innovative community-driven knitting cowl pattern designed by Laurie Beardsley. This unique project invites knitters to create personalized cowls using a randomly generated eyelet pattern that develops as you knit. The pattern is deliberately flexible, allowing crafters to work with any yarn weight and customize dimensions to their preferences, making each finished cowl truly one-of-a-kind.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a knitted cowl—a tubular neckwear accessory worked in the round. The cowl features an adjustable circumference and length, with the sample measuring 22 inches (56 centimeters) in circumference and 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) in length. The defining characteristic of this design is its randomly generated eyelet pattern, which creates visual interest and texture throughout the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The foundation of this cowl is 1x1 ribbing worked in the round, a classic knitting technique that creates vertical columns of alternating knit and purl stitches. This ribbed structure provides elasticity and a fitted appearance around the neck. The pattern incorporates eyelets—small decorative holes created through yarn overs and decreases—which are randomly distributed throughout the cowl as you work. The random placement of these eyelets is determined using a random number generator, adding an element of spontaneity and personalization to the design process.
Yarn Weight Flexibility
A standout feature of Social Distancing, Together is its compatibility with multiple yarn weights. The pattern accommodates the following yarn weights:
- Cobweb
- Lace
- Fingering
- Sport
- DK (Double Knit)
- 3-ply
- 4-ply
- Worsted
- 6-ply
- Aran
- Heavy Worsted
- Chunky
- Super Chunky
- Varied weight
The sample cowl can be completed with one skein or less of yarn in any weight, making this an economical project suitable for using yarn scraps or single skeins from your stash.
Gauge Information
Gauge is provided for 1x1 ribbing worked in the round and varies by yarn weight. General estimates include:
- Fingering weight: 26 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters)
- DK weight: 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters)
- Worsted weight: 15 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters)
Materials and Tools Required
To complete this project, you will need:
- Yarn in any weight of your choice, with yardage determined by your selected yarn weight and desired finished measurements
- Appropriately sized circular knitting needles (the sample was worked on 16-inch circular needles)
- A tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- A stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds
- A random number generator (digital tool or app) to determine eyelet placement
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward 1x1 ribbing stitch and basic eyelet construction require only fundamental knitting skills, though familiarity with working in the round on circular needles is helpful.
Community and Customization
Social Distancing, Together is an evolving community project. Knitters are encouraged to participate in the make-along discussion, sharing their progress and unique interpretations of the design. The random eyelet generation system ensures that no two cowls are identical, celebrating individual creativity within a structured pattern framework.
