Spring Drops Cowl by Martha Myers
What is Being Made
The Spring Drops Cowl is a lightweight, circular neckwear design created by Martha Myers for the Carolina FiberFest. This cowl is engineered to provide warmth during the transitional season of early spring while maintaining a breathable, airy construction. The finished cowl measures 12 inches (30 cm) around and 13 inches (33 cm) tall, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for cool mornings and evenings.
Design and Pattern Features
The cowl showcases minimal patterning, making it an ideal canvas for showcasing hand-dyed yarns and specialty skeins. The design philosophy prioritizes yarn visibility, allowing the beauty of variegated or hand-painted colorways to take center stage rather than being obscured by complex stitch patterns. This approach makes the Spring Drops Cowl particularly appealing for knitters who have invested in premium or artisanal yarn selections.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Spring Drops Cowl employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters:
- Drop stitch technique: The signature element of this design, where stitches are intentionally dropped off the needle and allowed to unravel down to designated yarn over points, creating vertical lines and texture
- Yarn overs (YO and YO2): Used to create decorative eyelets and lace elements while maintaining the airy aesthetic
- In-the-round knitting: Constructed using circular needles to create a seamless, tubular garment
- Decreases: Techniques including SSK (slip, slip, knit) and K2tog (knit two together) for shaping and pattern definition
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows
- K (Knit) and P (Purl): Basic knitting stitches
- YO (Yarn Over) and YO2 (Yarn Over 2 times): Create holes and decorative elements
- K2tog (Knit 2 Together) and SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): Decrease stitches for shaping
- Drop stitch: A stitch dropped off the needle and pulled down to a yarn over point
- sl (Slip stitch with yarn in back): Used in decrease sequences
- CO (Cast On) and BO (Bind Off): Beginning and finishing techniques
- PM (Place Marker): Marks the beginning of rounds and positions before yarn overs to guide drop stitches
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Spring Drops Cowl requires 330 yards (301 meters) of fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn. This yardage is sufficient for the completed cowl dimensions. The pattern is worked on US 4 (3.5mm) needles with a gauge of 28 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Knitters will need stitch markers, including one unique marker to denote the beginning of round. The pattern notes that stitch markers should be placed in front of yarn overs to ensure drop stitches pull down correctly to their designated anchor points.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-level project, the Spring Drops Cowl is accessible to knitters new to the craft while introducing them to intermediate techniques such as drop stitches and yarn overs. The minimal patterning and straightforward construction make it an excellent project for building confidence with circular needle knitting and decorative stitch techniques.
