Product Description
FWY that’s the northern pole star Polaris and the Big Dipper. From where I live I see them all in the night sky. The Polaris align with the Big Dippers two right most stars and it’s 3 times further away than the distance between those two stars. The Big Dipper is a part of the Ursa Major, “big bear” constellation and the North Star is the tip of the tail of Ursa Minor, “Little Bear”. Bears were sacred, feared and respected animals in the Nord and it was believed to be born from the Big Dipper fallen to earth. Bears were called by many names, King of the Forest being one of them, no one wanted to say it’s real name in fear of calling one to them.
Gauge30 sts over 32 rows = 10 cm (4 inch) knitted in the round after wet blocking.
The pattern includes the written instructions for Estonian Braid as well as size alterations.
Pattern is test knitted.
Talvisen Maan Hetki Mittens by Artesanitarium Designs
Project Overview
Talvisen Maan Hetki is a knitted mitten pattern inspired by Nordic celestial themes and bear mythology. The design draws from northern sky constellations visible from the designer's location, incorporating the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and Polaris (the North Star, tip of Ursa Minor). The pattern celebrates the sacred and revered status of bears in Nordic culture, where these animals were believed to originate from the Big Dipper constellation itself.
Craft and Technique
This is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The mittens are constructed using traditional knitting techniques appropriate for a fitted hand garment. The pattern includes guidance for customizing the fit across multiple sizes, with specific adjustments for smaller and larger hand measurements.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern instructions, the mittens employ standard knitting stitches typical of fitted mitten construction. The pattern provides size-specific modifications, allowing knitters to adjust needle sizes based on their chosen dimensions—decreasing needle size for small sizes and increasing for large sizes to maintain proper gauge and fit.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for sport weight yarn in a green main color. Artesanitarium Designs recommends fingering weight wool or wool blend as an alternative, specifically suggesting Garnstudio Drops Nord (170 meters / 186 yards per 50 grams) as a suitable yarn choice. The main color requires 2 skeins (100 grams) of green. Knitters should select appropriate needles based on their yarn choice and desired size, adjusting needle gauge according to the pattern's sizing guidelines.
