The Alana Tank by Born & Raised Knits

What Is Being Made

The Alana Tank is a beginner-friendly knitted sleeveless top designed for a range of bust sizes from 28 to 62 inches. This versatile garment features a classic tank silhouette with decorative I-cord straps, making it suitable for various body types and skill levels. The pattern includes nine different sizing options to accommodate different measurements and fit preferences.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginners while maintaining visual interest. The construction method is bottom-up knitting, meaning you begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the neckline. The garment is primarily worked knitting in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern also incorporates striping colorwork, a straightforward technique where you alternate between two yarn colors to create horizontal stripes throughout the design. Additionally, the tank features I-cord straps, which are decorative cord elements created using double-pointed needles.

Stitches Used

The Alana Tank utilizes essential knitting stitches suitable for beginner crafters:

  • Knit (k) — the fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric
  • Purl (p) — used to create textural variation and pattern interest
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) — a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) — a left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced shaping
  • Slip marker (sm) — used to mark pattern repeats and construction sections
  • Place marker (pm) — used to indicate important points in the pattern

Materials and Tools

The Alana Tank requires DK weight yarn in two colors. The main color (MC) is Marble from We Love Knitting, with yardage ranging from 400 to 500 yards depending on size. The contrast color (CC) is Fluoro Pink, also from We Love Knitting, requiring 60 to 120 yards depending on size. The pattern calls for US 6-8 circular needles measuring 32 inches in length for the main body, and US 6-8 double-pointed needles (DPNs) for creating the I-cord straps. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern sections. The gauge is worked at the standard tension for DK weight yarn on these needle sizes.
