Product Description
This triangular shawl is both eye-catching and perfect for spring-summer. It is knit with a light weight yarn and features two “true lace” stitches.
It is knit from the top down in the shape of an isosceles triangle, with very easy shaping and can be worn in a variety of ways.
The pattern contains instructions for two different sizes, smaller for those who prefer that, and a slightly larger one for others of you. The smaller one is the one shown. There are also instructions for an optional crochet edging, as well as instructions for optional tassels should you want them.
The stitches are charted out and written out.
Skill Level: Intermediate + - Advanced.
The sample was knit out of Lorna’s Laces Soulmate yarn, but any light weight fingering weight yarn will work for this pattern.
No crochet hooks are needed if you don't want to crochet the optional edging.
The Pyranees Lace Cuneate Triangular Shawl by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Pyranees Lace Cuneate is a triangular shawl designed by Linda Lehman, available in two sizes to suit different preferences and yarn quantities. This lightweight wrap offers versatile styling options, making it a flexible addition to any wardrobe. The triangular construction provides multiple ways to wear and drape the finished piece.
Design and Construction
This shawl features a cuneate (wedge-shaped) triangular silhouette that expands gradually from a single point. The design emphasizes traditional lace work throughout, with both the focal stitch and border stitch drawing from authentic Shetland lace heritage. The use of historic Shetland lace stitches ensures that this piece combines classical knitting techniques with contemporary wearable design.
Stitches and Techniques
The Pyranees Lace Cuneate showcases two primary lace stitches, both of which are true Shetland lace patterns. The focal stitch creates the central design element, while a complementary border stitch frames the shawl's edges. Both stitches are classified as traditional lace work, requiring solid lace knitting knowledge and experience. The pattern assumes intermediate to advanced proficiency with lace techniques, including yarn overs, decreases, and the ability to read and follow complex stitch patterns across multiple rows.
Yarn and Materials
This knitting project uses lightweight fingering weight yarn (4-ply), chosen for its delicate drape and the intricate stitch definition it provides for lace work. The smaller wrap requires 850 to 1000 yards of yarn, while the larger version calls for 1000 to 1200 yards. Knitters will need Size 5 needles with a cable length of at least 32 inches to accommodate the expanding triangular shape. Additional materials include two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a darning needle or Chibi tool for weaving in yarn ends after blocking.
Gauge and Finishing
The recommended gauge is approximately 5.5 stitches to the inch and 8½ rows to the inch, measured in the lace border stitch after moderate blocking. Proper blocking is essential to open up the lace stitches and achieve the intended drape and finished dimensions of this triangular shawl.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate+ to Advanced, specifically for knitters with established lace knitting experience and comfort working with complex stitch patterns over extended rows.
