Product Description
These socks are my attempt to create more options for socks knit with sock yarn held double. I have come to prefer the warmth and squishiness of thicker socks, and I love that it uses a full skein of sock yarn plus some minis or leftovers. The heels, toes and cuffs are knit the same, and there are three options for patterning, and all are easy to memorize once the pattern is established.
Pattern Notes: This pattern is knit using sock weight yarn held double throughout and comes in two adult sizes. The heel, toe, and cuff can be knit entirely in a contrast colour (as in the Fenced Rows and Garden Plots socks), OR knit using one strand of the contrast colour with one strand of the main colour (as in the Cobblestones socks). I provide instructions for a heel flap and gusset, but your preferred heel method or pattern can be substituted.
Thick Socks Three More Ways by Dana Rae
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern provides instructions for creating three distinct variations of thick, cushioned socks designed for adult wearers. The pattern offers multiple design options while maintaining consistent construction methods for the heel, toe, and cuff across all three versions. These socks are specifically engineered to use a full skein of sock yarn plus additional mini skeins or leftover yarn, making them an efficient choice for sock sets or coordinating pairs with a single additional mini skein.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for sock weight yarn held double throughout the entire project, creating the characteristic thickness and squishiness that defines these designs. Main color yarn requirements range from 80 to 100 grams, with contrast color yardage also specified. The doubled yarn technique transforms standard sock weight yarn into a substantially warmer and more textured finished sock. The pattern accommodates two adult sizes.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level pattern employs several specialized sock knitting techniques. The heel construction uses a traditional heel flap and gusset method, though the pattern notes that knitters may substitute their preferred heel technique or alternative heel patterns if desired. The pattern provides flexibility in color application for structural elements: heels, toes, and cuffs can be knit entirely in a contrast color, or alternatively, knit using one strand of contrast color combined with one strand of main color for a blended effect.
Stitch Patterns and Design Options
The pattern features three distinct patterning options for the leg and foot sections of the socks, each with its own visual character:
- Fenced Rows socks – featuring contrast color heels, toes, and cuffs knit entirely in a secondary color
- Garden Plots socks – also utilizing fully contrasting heels, toes, and cuffs
- Cobblestones socks – featuring blended heels, toes, and cuffs created using one strand each of contrast and main colors
All three pattern variations are described as easy to memorize once the initial pattern repeat is established, making them accessible for intermediate knitters despite the doubled yarn construction.
Yarn Weight Specifications
The pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply sock weight yarns held double, creating a thicker, more durable finished fabric than traditional single-strand sock knitting. This doubled construction provides enhanced warmth and cushioning while maintaining the characteristic drape and fit of sock construction.
