Product Description
I designed this shawl for one very specific reason: sometimes you want to knit those last bits of leftover yarn but you have no way to determine if you have enough to complete a pattern. Thanks to the genius of Lee Meredith (Leethal Knits) you can, and you never need to pick up stitches. This pattern incorporates the Sideways Edge Cast On that she created, with her permission. For more information on this cast on, please visit Lee’s blog at: leethal dot net
Shawls can be knit in either garter stitch (see red & white sample) or stockinette (see purple sample). Can be knit as a rectangular shawl, or use the optional short rows for a slight crescent shape.
Tech edited and test knit.
Chart included to help you determine how many stitches to cast on for each yarn weight.
Use Your Stash Shawl by Windswept Knits
What is Being Made
The Use Your Stash Shawl is a versatile knitted shawl designed by Monique Leonard for Windswept Knits. This project is engineered to work with virtually any yarn weight or fiber content, making it an ideal pattern for crafters looking to utilize leftover yarn from their stash. The shawl can be customized in length and can incorporate single colors or multiple colors for visual interest.
Design Flexibility and Gauge
One of the defining characteristics of this pattern is its gauge-independent construction. Unlike traditional knitting patterns that require a specific gauge, this shawl works with any weight or fiber content, allowing knitters to choose their preferred yarn and needle size. The pattern accommodates yarn weights ranging from 3-ply and 4-ply lace weights through to aran and heavy worsted, providing exceptional flexibility for stash busting.
Techniques Used
The Use Your Stash Shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for knitters with intermediate-level experience. The construction utilizes wrap and turn (w&t) techniques for shaping, along with strategic increases and decreases to create the shawl's structure. Knitters will work with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain shaping throughout the project.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches for texture variation
- Stockinette stitch (St st) – smooth, classic fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Make 1 left (M1l) – an increase technique for adding stitches
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows
- Slip 1 stitch (Sl1) – used for edge definition and pattern transitions
- Slip marker (SM) – maintains pattern placement
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern requires a circular needle measuring 40 inches (101.5 cm) or longer, with the needle size determined by your chosen yarn weight and desired gauge. Additional materials include a stitch marker, tapestry needle for finishing, and yarn in any amount and weight of your preference.
The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights as demonstrated by the provided samples. The red and white sample measures 5 feet (1.5 m) in length and uses 127 yards of white and 226 yards of red, both worked in worsted weight on a US size 8 (5 mm) needle. The purple sample measures 6 feet (1.8 m) and was knit in sport weight using 545 yards total on a US size 3 (3.25 mm) needle. These examples illustrate how the same pattern adapts across different yarn weights to create finished pieces of comparable length.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Use Your Stash Shawl is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with increases, decreases, and shaping techniques. The wrap and turn technique and stitch marker management require intermediate skills, though the straightforward construction makes this an accessible pattern for advancing knitters.
