Product Description
This has been test knitted. This is a top down triangle shawl. Lots of texture! This uses M1 increases, slipped stitch rib, seed stitch, and some bobbles. Ending with a chevron lace border. This is sure to keep you from boredom! This pattern is good for advanced beginners, yet enough to keep experienced knitters entertained. I have included links to video tutorials that will help you along the way. I have included a running stitch count format, so you always know how many stitches you should have on your needles!
This design is dedicated to my grandmother, Vera. She taught me how to knit and crochet at the age of 8. I remember, as a child I would sit and watch her knit, I was absolutely stunned by what she could do with sticks and yarn. She loved to make things for her grandchildren. She especially enjoyed bobbles or the popcorn stitch, she made afghans for each of her grandchildren using a pattern with bobbles in it.
Vera's Shawl by Susanne Talluri
What Is Being Made
Vera's Shawl is a top-down triangle shawl designed by Susanne Talluri for Handmade By Zan Designs. This knitted shawl combines multiple stitch techniques and textural elements to create a dynamic, visually interesting garment. The design is dedicated to the designer's grandmother, Vera, who taught her to knit and crochet and inspired the inclusion of bobbles and chevron stitching—techniques that held special meaning in the family's knitting tradition.
Techniques Used
Vera's Shawl employs a range of intermediate knitting techniques that add depth and visual interest throughout the piece:
- Top-down construction: The shawl is worked from the top downward, allowing for easy adjustments to finished size and a natural progression of increases
- M1 increases: Make-one increases are used to shape the triangular silhouette and control shaping throughout the body of the shawl
- Bobbles: Textural bobbles (also known as popcorn stitches) are incorporated as a decorative element, adding dimension and tactile interest
- Chevron lace border: The shawl concludes with a chevron lace border that echoes traditional stitch patterns and provides an elegant finished edge
Stitches Used
The pattern combines several distinct stitch patterns to create visual and textural variety:
- Slipped stitch rib: Creates structured vertical lines and helps define stitch patterns
- Seed stitch: Produces a bumpy, textured fabric surface that contrasts with smoother stitch sections
- Bobbles: Three-dimensional raised stitches that add sculptural detail
- Chevron lace: A geometric, openwork pattern that creates visual movement and serves as the border finish
Materials and Specifications
Vera's Shawl is worked in DK weight yarn using standard knitting needles appropriate for the yarn weight. The pattern includes a running stitch count throughout to help knitters track their progress and ensure accuracy. Video tutorials are provided within the pattern to guide knitters through less common techniques.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Classified as suitable for advanced beginners, Vera's Shawl offers enough complexity to maintain the interest of experienced knitters while remaining accessible to those with foundational knitting skills. The combination of textured stitches, increases, and lace work provides engaging challenges without overwhelming newer crafters. The inclusion of video tutorials and running stitch counts supports knitters in successfully completing the project.
