Wells Cable Lace Socks by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Wells Cable Lace Socks are a pair of knitted socks featuring an integrated cable and lace pattern design. These socks are available in multiple sizes ranging from Small through Extra Large, making them a versatile project for various foot dimensions. The design combines decorative cable work with lace elements to create a visually striking finished garment that appears more complex than the actual construction process.
Skill Level and Design Approach
Designed by Linda Lehman, these socks are classified as an Intermediate skill level project. The pattern assumes knitters have foundational knowledge of basic knitting techniques, purling, and cable work. Despite their sophisticated appearance, the Wells Cable Lace Socks are engineered to be more straightforward to execute than they look, making them an excellent choice for knitters seeking to expand their abilities without overwhelming complexity.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used
The construction of these socks employs several essential knitting techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch – Forms the foundational fabric base for gauge measurement and primary sock structure
- Cable Stitches – Created using a cable needle to cross stitches over one another, producing the dimensional twisted rope effect characteristic of cable patterns
- Lace Stitches – Incorporated throughout the design to create openwork sections that add visual interest and reduce fabric weight
- Kitchener Stitch – Used for grafting the sock toe closed with an invisible seam, requiring a tapestry needle for execution
- Slip Stitches – Utilized for various shaping and pattern transitions throughout the sock
Yarn and Materials Specifications
The Wells Cable Lace Socks require 390 to 450 yards of lightweight fingering weight yarn in a 4-ply construction. This yardage range accommodates the different sizes offered in the pattern. Fingering weight yarn is the traditional choice for sock knitting, providing the appropriate thickness for comfortable, durable everyday wear while allowing stitch definition in cable and lace work.
Needles and Gauge Information
The pattern utilizes circular needles for seamless sock construction. Needle sizing varies by desired sock size to achieve proper gauge:
- Size Small: US #2.25mm circular needles with a gauge of 9 stitches per inch
- Size Medium (M): US #2.50mm circular needles with a gauge of 7 stitches per inch
- Size Medium-Large to Large: US #2.75mm or #3.00mm circular needles with a gauge of 6½ stitches per inch
The pattern recommends two size-appropriate circular needles for the two-at-a-time sock knitting method. An optional 12-inch needle in the same size as your working circular needles may be used as needed. A cable needle is essential for manipulating stitches during cable pattern sections. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a tapestry needle for the Kitchener Stitch grafting technique, and an optional row counter to track progress through the pattern.

The Wells Cable Lace Socks pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, allowing immediate access to complete instructions, abbreviations, and stitch definitions needed to begin the project.
