Product Description
Zigguratlettissimo is the (new) Workshop-sized version of Simple Ziggurat.
You may wish to practice on this mini workshop version how to Ziggurat on a small scale before casting on for an adult size sweater. Zigguralettissimo may fit some crocodiles, certain penguins and the odd teddy bear. Or knit one just for fun.
The instructions are modelled as closely as possible on the latest versions of my Ziggurat sweaters. In other words, you will find all the usual Ziggurat Steps:
From a regular cast on a Ziggurat pullover is knitted top down with contiguous set-in sleeves, winding its way back and forth for just a small while before normal knitting in the round begins. It’s an all in one, seamless technique.
Wollmeise Colours used for the sample sweater: Himbeere (pink), Zarte Knospe (yellow-green), Möhrchen (orange)
Zigguratlettissimo Doll Sweater by Åsa Tricosa
What is Being Made
The Zigguratlettissimo is a top-down knitted pullover sweater designed for dolls. This seamless garment features a distinctive construction method that incorporates set-in sleeves worked continuously as part of the main body, creating an integrated, all-in-one design without seaming.
Construction Technique
This pattern employs a top-down seamless knitting method, beginning from the neckline and working downward. The construction is notable for its innovative approach to sleeve integration: rather than knitting sleeves separately and attaching them, the sleeves are set in and worked contiguously with the body. The pattern incorporates strategic directional changes, winding back and forth briefly before transitioning to knitting in the round, which creates the signature ziggurat-like shaping that gives the design its name.
The pattern utilizes a Magic Loop technique for working small circumferences on circular needles, making it suitable for doll-sized garments. A Crochet Cast On begins the project, providing a flexible foundation edge.
Stitches and Shaping Techniques
The Zigguratlettissimo incorporates several specialized knitting techniques:
- Make One Purl (M1p) – used for strategic increases that maintain stitch definition
- German Short Rows – employed to create shaped sections and contours without visible gaps
- Stretchy Cast Off – provides flexibility at the garment edges for ease of dressing the doll
- Winding Provisional Cast On – used for sections requiring later pick-up or modification
- Simple Pocket – an optional decorative or functional detail
Materials and Needle Requirements
This beginner-level pattern requires 50 grams of DK weight yarn to complete the sweater, with an optional scrap of contrasting color (CC) yarn for accents or details. The pattern calls for two circular needles: a primary 3.5–4 mm (US 4–6) circular needle measuring 80–100 cm (32"–40") for the main body work, and a smaller 3–3.5 mm (US 2.5–4) circular needle of the same length for ribbed sections or tighter gauge areas. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern sections throughout construction.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, the Zigguratlettissimo is accessible to knitters new to garment construction, though it introduces intermediate techniques such as German Short Rows and set-in sleeve shaping. The pattern includes helpful linked references to detailed tutorials for each specialized technique, supporting knitters through less familiar methods.
