Product Description
Zombies and babies have one thing in common – they are very messy eaters! Whether the cause of your personal laundry apocalypse is pablum or brains, a good bib can make all the difference. And this one has a lot of advantages. It’s reversible, so you can flip it for the next feeding if the first side gets messy. It’s double-thick, so it’s extra-absorbent. It fits on over baby’s head, so it’s hard for wee ones to take off by themselves – even the crawling dead! And if your ravenous little monster is still hungry after their meal, the bib even has a finger for them to suck…or gnaw on, depending on their preference, of course.
(In lieu of actual brains, try blobs of tomato sauce for that lovely gory look!)

Zombaby Reversible Baby Bib by Kathleen Sperling
Project Overview
The Zombaby is a novelty knitted baby bib designed by independent designer Kathleen Sperling. This playful project combines practical baby care with zombie-themed humor, creating a reversible, double-thick bib that functions as both a feeding essential and a whimsical accessory. The bib is sized to fit head circumferences up to approximately 17.5 inches, making it suitable for infants and young toddlers.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a reversible baby bib with several functional features designed to manage feeding messes. The bib is constructed as a double-thick garment, providing extra absorbency for messy eaters. A distinctive design element includes an attached finger or protrusion that babies can suck or gnaw on, serving as both a teething aid and a humorous nod to the zombie theme. The bib pulls on over the baby's head, making it difficult for young children to remove independently, addressing a common parenting challenge.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Zombaby employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills. The pattern requires working in the round, a technique that creates seamless tubular fabric. Knitters can choose from multiple methods to work in the round: double-pointed needles (DPNs), two circular needles, or the magic loop technique. The pattern also incorporates chart reading, allowing knitters to follow stitch-by-stitch instructions visually for shaping and detail work.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern requires fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches. These basic stitches form the foundation of the bib's structure. Chart reading skills enable knitters to follow more complex stitch patterns that create the bib's shaping and any decorative or thematic elements incorporated into the design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Zombaby pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits at a standard gauge suitable for baby garments. Worsted weight provides good stitch definition while maintaining reasonable knitting speed. The pattern requires needles appropriate for working in the round, whether double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop supplies, all sized to match the chosen yarn weight for proper fabric density and drape.
Design Features and Reversibility
A key advantage of the Zombaby design is its reversible construction. Parents can flip the bib to a clean side after the first feeding, extending usability between washes. The double-thick structure not only increases absorbency but also provides durability for frequent washing and use. The attached finger element adds both functionality as a teething tool and thematic appeal, with the designer suggesting tomato sauce application for authentic zombie aesthetic.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Zombaby requires knitters to be comfortable with basic stitches and have experience working in the round. Chart reading adds a moderate challenge, making this pattern suitable for knitters beyond the absolute beginner stage but not requiring advanced techniques.
