Zonky Shawl by Vibrant Viking
Project Overview
The Zonky Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Ann Iverson of Vibrant Viking. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a generous triangular or crescent-shaped shawl measuring approximately 59 inches (almost 5 feet / 150 cm) in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design showcases a beautiful herringbone stitch pattern and is engineered as a one-skein-wonder project, allowing crafters to create an elegant finished piece from a single skein of yarn with minimal yardage remaining for finishing details like a tassel.
Techniques and Stitches
This shawl employs classic knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch pattern featured throughout the shawl is the herringbone stitch, which creates a distinctive diagonal texture and visual interest across the fabric. The herringbone pattern is worked at a gauge of 34 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters), providing structure and definition to the finished piece. The shawl construction also incorporates lace elements within the interior design, adding delicate openwork details that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal. Finishing techniques include binding off and the optional addition of a decorative tassel, allowing makers to personalize their completed shawl.
Materials Required
The Zonky Shawl pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the designer's intended result:
- Yarn: Blue Mule Fiber Zonky in Finger/Sock Weight (4-ply), 100 grams, 100% Superwash Merino 21 Micron, approximately 437 yards. The recommended colorway is Texas Ranger, with the entire skein used for the shawl and tassel.
- Needles: US Size 10 (6.00 mm) circular needle, 48 inches or longer in length, to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands.
- Notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and securing the tassel, plus 2 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction progress.
Pattern Characteristics
The Zonky Shawl is designed as a one-skein-wonder project, meaning the entire shawl can be completed using a single skein of yarn with minimal waste. This efficient design makes it an accessible project for crafters seeking to create an impressive finished garment without requiring large yarn purchases. The gauge flexibility noted in the pattern indicates that achieving exact gauge is not critical to the shawl's success, making it forgiving for knitters at the intermediate level. The combination of the herringbone stitch pattern with lace elements creates visual depth and texture, resulting in a sophisticated accessory that showcases the beautiful qualities of the Superwash Merino yarn.
